Baby Gifts You’ll Actually Use Beyond Babyhood

Don’t you just love the joy and celebration of a new baby? There is nothing quite like the entrance of a new sweet squishy baby human. And showering the new Mom and baby with baby gifts is so lovely! But after having 3 babies I realized we give new mothers a bunch of stuff they barely or just won’t use. Don’t even get me started on those online lists of what you “need.” Nobody I have ever met used that wipe warmer. In all honesty most Moms end up using just a few things they love. And those baby gifts are kept beyond the first baby. Especially those items that are utilized longer than a few weeks. The best baby gifts are those that you use over and over. The gifts that you use even when the sweet baby smell is replaced with toddler scent. And I am here to say that the premade baskets are super cute but you are rarely gonna use any of that random stuff. Baby washcloths will be replaced with whatever is closest and not dirty. The first time you cut your baby’s nail too short with crappy nail clippers you will chuck those things so quick. And suction-less suckers are just irritating! Without going on and on here are the top 5 things I wish people gave as baby gifts.
If you want to buy a baby gift and have it be something that lasts I would definitely suggest Estella NYC. They create classic designs that are fashion forward. Not to mention they use sustainable and organic materials, to please even the most concerned mother. Ranging from home decor to baby toys these guys are doing it right. These are the items that end up as decor and keepsakes long after the batteries run out of the annoying light up toys. Estella NYC has items that other Mothers will want to know where you got them. Because they are unique, super soft, and your kids will want to use these baby gifts long after they move out of the crib. These are the gifts that your kid will demand night after night as their comfort item. These are the toys that are displayed on shelves and passed on to their babies. Baby shoes are not created equally. There are these crazy adorable newborn booties that simply are not capable of being kept on OR put on. It’s a serious disaster and you hear so many Moms say they just stop putting on shoes cause they just get lost. And it’s so true! Name one mother who hasn’t lost a baby shoe before and she wins life. With my first baby I received loads of shoes that were never worn. Plus, I bought more impossible shoes. With my third baby I bought 4 sets of shoes that carried us through the first year. Soft soled leather baby shoes are by far one of the greatest baby items. They stay on. That is huge! Also, they come in sizes that give you a range of use: 0-6 Months, 6-12 Months, etc. Not to mention they are better for early walking. They allow babies to feel the earth and find their balance. My babes wore their soft soled leather baby shoes into toddlerhood and loved them. And I loved that they held up and looked nice too!
What is the deal with the one thousand blankets a new Mom receives? Let’s be real if you aren’t grandma and making an heirloom quilt stop buying the blankets for gifts. I am pretty sure we had like fifty baby blankets and ended up using one or two muslin swaddles over and over. These are lightweight and can be used for way more than a swaddle. There has been so many times I used a swaddler for a nursing cover because my babies could breath AND see under it. Those blankies are still in use at my house. My kiddos love their muslin swaddler blankets more than any others. When we travel we bring these for naps, towels, and comfort. They roll up nicely and don’t take up too much space. Moms these are the softest blankets that are cute, functional, and last.
This one seems like an odd addition I know. But let me tell why this is on my list. First of all music is so soothing for parents and kids. Sometimes you just want something familiar and easy to grab as you are putting a cranky baby to bed. When I have a new baby I keep several of these in my nursery and play these little tunes as I nurse, play with, and rock my babies. My littles are bigger now and they still love to crank these and listen to the melodies. Sometimes I hear them before bed listening to their little songs to fall asleep. And I can’t forget to mention that the little crank encourages the pincher grip that aids in handwriting later on. Also it allows the child to see the mechanics and science behind music, rhythm, and vibration. These things are tough too and can withstand some crazy kids like mine. Educational, soothing, fun, and sturdy. Winner winner chicken dinner! P.S. There are a ton of different songs to choose from too!
Books, Books, & More Books
Finally the gift that keeps on giving over and over! You can never have enough books for your kiddos. Specifically board books when they are tiny. One of my favorite shower ideas is to bring a signed book instead of a card. And you can almost find books as cheap as cards these days. We have so many memories of reading together. Studies say that reading to babies builds strong readers in the future. Books are always in style and timeless. Giving a book that has meaning to you will always be meaningful to the receiver. So put down that onesie, no matter how cute, that Mom already has a million… Buy a book instead. Some of our personal favorites that we think everyone should have:
