Donut Necklace and Paper Pumpkin Invitation

Our family has 3 birthdays in the month of July and as soon as it warms up the kids start talking about what they want the theme of their parties to be. This year my 4 year old soon to be 5 decided that her party will be Flamingos & Donuts. I mean it makes sense right? Pink, sweets, glitter, and sprinkles? Yup, that about sums that little lady up. Since I am a true sucker of a Mom of course I said yes. And since I am a huge fan of parties I am going all in.
When the May Paper Pumpkin kit arrived I was thrown right into the party prep. It’s always a surprise to find out what is in our monthly happy mail. This time we opened the box to see the perfect donut cards to make for Asha’s party. The girls were squealing with delight and we HAD to make the invitations right then and there. So we got to it and oh my do I adore these donuts. We used several different stamps from our current Paper Pumpkin kit as well as past boxes. One thing I always appreciate about this kit is that everything works well together and you can just let your imagination create without the hassle of shopping and getting everything together. Yeeeeek! Didn’t these turn out so dang cute? I am so very happy with them. They say that the invitation to a party sets the whole tone for the event. The first impression is the card. Well I think this is going to be the beginning of many more party posts as we put this little Flamingo & Donut party together. Be prepared for more pink glitter and sprinkles!
DIY Donut Party Necklace Favor
My husband will tell you I suffer from the “give a mouse a cookie” syndrome. Once I get going on an idea I just flow into the next idea. In fact most the time I have to write stuff down and try not to do 3 or 5 projects at a time. Innately I dislike disorder and when I start jumping around to projects I get frazzled. Once the cards were finished then I said ok lets make the favors cause I got an idea from these Paper Pumpkin donuts. The idea started with shrinky dink charms. When I was a kid my Mom made literally hundreds of little charm necklaces for her church kids. She drew little temples and hand lettered each one. PERFECTLY. I remember loving to watch them shrink up in the oven. Odd how these memories stick with you and then you want to share that same memory with your kids. And the kids were all about it too! We used the same donut die cut from the invitations as our tracing picture. And my frugality comes out so we went and got polystyrene #6 plastic containers with cinnamon rolls to use as our shrinky plastic. Snacks and materials. WINNING. Trace. Color. Cut. Bake at 350* F for a minute. Super simple and quick and stinking fun to do. Note when you take them out they may need to be smashed down as they curl a bit.
Clay Donut Party Beads
Once the charms were done I got a…. “Oh my oatmeal! Momma those are the cutest!” But my girls have the same syndrome as I do and informed me the charms were perfect for a beaded necklace. Not just a regular bead though. Donut beads of course! So we got going on some basic kitchen clay. Rolled the clay out into snake like cylinders, cut, shaped, and poked a hole. Don’t they look like little cheerios? They did to me and that gave me another future idea to blog about. Watch for that later. Bake them at 375 for 10-20 minutes. The longer you bake them the darker they get and so we did some light and some dark for chocolate donuts. Take them out, cool and paint the frosting/sprinkles. TA-DA make lots and lots of beads.
Putting it Together
My favorite parties are hands on parties for kids! I will be making bowls of these beads and shrinky charms. Then for the activity at our party we will make our own little charm necklaces. Giving the kids time to string on the beads and choose the colors they like. I can’t wait to show you all what they come up with at the party! And stay tuned as I allow my syndrome to get the best of me as I start to make all the littles details of the great Flamingos & Donut party!
