DIY Artwork Gallery Wall that ANYONE can do!
This article contains sponsored content all opinions and ideas are my own.
My oldest daughter is a little artist girl. She goes through paper and art supplies like it’s nobody’s business. But because she is always creating she wants to display her art in her room. And she doesn’t just want to display it she wants to design her own gallery wall. Then change it a day later and change it again after we worked on a homeschool craft.
We have tried several different methods to allow her the opportunity to display her artwork. We started fairly simply with basic tape and push pins. But after awhile of her moving and rearranging things there were too many pock marks all over the wall. In fact I ended up having to fill sand and repaint. Then we turned to different pull and stick hangers. She struggled to place these herself and they would pull off too much paint. So we were back to the drawing board because the traditional display methods just weren’t working.
What a Girl Wants in Her Dream Gallery Wall
Here’s the thing. I don’t want to damage my walls to hang a bunch of stuff. Because I CAN fix it, I have those skills but I don’t WANT to fix it. When I put up a gallery wall I want everything to move quickly and easily as I buy/create new pieces. How many times have you seen people put a bazillion holes in a wall to hang a few pictures? It makes me sick to my stomach. Especially when people are trying to figure out where they want to place things. It can quickly become a disaster and a time consuming “project.” But I think things should be different. I think you should be able to hang art and move it seamlessly and simply until it feels right.
Even someone with a good eye will move things around several times before it feels good. From side to side. Up and down. So many different adjustments go into finding a good placement of a gallery wall. We have all seen the gallery wall fails. Here’s the thing, displaying art can be and is easy. If you have the right hardware and a vision.
We finally got smart and found the STAS picture hanging system. We used the mini rail cut into two pieces. (I cut it with my chop saw, so easy.) Then to hang we chose the perlon cord and STAS smartspring hooks. What is incredible about this system is the ease of use. AND you are putting up one set of mounting hardware and that is it. No more bazillion holes! Say goodbye to wall damage.
The cords slide in easily to the mini rail and you can move them along the rail until you like the placement. My daughter moved the cords herself until she liked the look. Then the awesome smartspring hooks easily adjust up or down the cord to find the vertical placement with ease. We found ourselves playing with the many options and they are totally unlimited. You can go crazy creating different displays and not have to pull anything off the wall. Plus, my 7 year old could do it and not destroy her bedroom walls.
Our Favorite Feature
We also received the STAS magnet set and fell in love with it! This was by far my daughter’s favorite feature and she really enjoyed arranging her art with the magnets. I loved that she could do this totally by herself and you can still hang other heavier art on the same cord. It’s so important to me as a Mom that I teach my kiddos that they can do it themselves. And by giving her these tools at her level she can begin to enjoy designing her own gallery art wall. I love to see her taking ownership in designing her space.
We really enjoyed putting this project together. Seeing my daughter so excited to make her room her own with her art and design made my heart happy! It helped that it was no stress and STAS made the process so simple. Now it’s your turn to get out and take ownership on your own gallery wall. What will you display?
