Well the time has come for my family to move again for CRNA school. Last time we moved we sold everything we owned and lived in a tiny house on wheels. Amazing experience but a whole other post. We rented our home while we were away. Not awesome. So we decided this time we would sell. With a heavy heart I am beginning to prepare. Isn’t it funny how we get our homes together right before we leave them? Because I want my old home to shine I have been searching for good ideas and tips. And I stumbled some great stuff from the best realtors in Cincinnati.
Staging Your Home
Staging in my opinion is a HUGE deal. Since I am looking at tons and tons of ads for homes for sale I am amazed by the pictures people are willing to post of their homes. Sometimes I will click off a decent house just because I can’t really “see” it because of clutter or personalization. Buyers want to see those original wood floors and granite countertops not your family pictures and dog toys.
The first tip on most of the home sites I have read is to DE-CLUTTER. This may also be the biggest task as well. As we live in homes it’s a natural tenancy to fill them up with furniture and “stuff.” So where to start right? Since I am a green planet geek, I start by selling things on FB and donating. If you have lots of energy do a yard sale. Finally, we will be packing up everything we don’t use regularly and putting it into storage. This makes the moving part pretty simple too, a lot will already be packed. We have a great post about all things declutter HERE you might want to check out as well.
Next thing on my list is to update decor and remove personal items like photos. People want to see the house and their family living in the house. I think making the house less personal allows people to start seeing their things inside rather than yours. Plus, I have a bunch of great decor ideas I have been dying to finish up and use before I leave. And to freshen everything up I will be adding bowls of lemons and fresh flowers on tables. Then opening up those blinds and bringing in as much light as possible, I cannot tell you how many dark photos of houses I have seen. Depressing.
To really top it off walk around your house and find all those things that bug you. Leaky sinks, burnt out light bulbs, that art or shelf you’ve been meaning to hang and just get it done. Once you have done all these things have a friend over to critique your house and see what else you could improve. Make a list!
