I’m a snacker. There. I said it. The problem is that my snacks of choice aren’t usually of the healthy variety. A couple of weeks ago I got my Bountiful Basket, complete with the lunchbox add on, and all of a sudden I had so many apples I knew I could never eat them all before they went bad. I thought of what I could do with them so they wouldn’t go bad and decided I would try some Easy Dried Apple Slices. Oh boy, I’m pretty excited about how they turned out.
Since it’s Fall, I went a little bit nuts with the pictures. The colors are all so pretty together. Don’t you think?
The first thing I did with the apples was to fill a large bowl with cold water and about 3 tablespoons of pure lemon juice. Then I peeled the apples and used my mandolin slicer to slice them up. I sliced them from bottom to top so the stars showed when they were cut. Then I took the seeds out. Aren’t they pretty? As I sliced the apples, I added them to the lemon water. The lemon water keeps the apples from turing brown.
Next, I spread them out on the racks of my dehydrator. I ended up using six trays for about 12 medium apples. I set the dehydrator to 135 degrees and dried them until they were completely dry. It took about 8 hours. After they cooled off, I put them in a container with a good locking lid so they will stay fresh longer.
I’d just like to say that these are amazing. They are a perfect car snack too, for when I’m out for a long time. I don’t eat fast food and these keeps me away from the candy bars most of the time.
After trying these apples, I’m thinking I may find some sweet peaches and try drying them. These were super easy. Now I just have to keep them away from my kids! Have you ever dried fruit? What is your favorite kind to dry?
