I love this time of year. The leaves change colors. The air gets cooler. Soon there will be snow on the ground. Well, not exactly, I live in Florida so we just pretend. Today I am going to share with you one of my favorite things to do this time of year, how to make DIY Simmering Potpourri. It makes your house smell so wonderful and festive!
I really think smells evoke feelings and memories. I love my house to smell like I am backing something, without actually having to bake something. I can remember when my older kids were little, they would rush in the door from school and get all excited. They would ask, “Did you make cookies?” and I would say no it’s just a candle. Poor kids, haha!
I have gotten more cautious about constantly having a candle burning in my house because of the harmful chemicals. I try to use natural products like an oil diffuser or simmering potpourri instead, although I still love candles!
The nice thing about this recipe is you probably have these items on hand and it is so cheep to make. There is no exact science to it. Use what you have.
DIY Simmering Potpourri
– Orange or orange peel cut up (I like to eat mine first and just use the peel)
– A cinnamon stick or a few dashes of ground cinnamon
– A few whole cloves or or a few dashes of ground cloves
– A dash of nutmeg
* You can add whole cranberries if you have them.
Put ingredients in a small sauce pan and fill with water. Bring water to a boil on medium-high heat and then reduce to simmer. When the water gets low, or can add more.
Enjoy an amazing smelling house!
