Travel Ideas for Little Kids
Yesterday was one of the longest traveling days that I’ve had in awhile!!! I have three young children; 5, 3, and 8 months. We don’t travel a lot so my kids aren’t “trained travelers”. As we started planning our trip from Idaho Falls to Florida, my biggest concern was the plane ride. We drove from Idaho Falls to Salt Lake City, then had a flight from Salt Lake to Ft. Worth, had a layover and finally ended up in Tampa.
The reason I was so concerned with the plane was because you are surrounded by people and you have to go by everyone else’s schedule. You can’t just threaten to pull over or turn around when the kids are fighting!! So I talked to my mom to get some ideas, she had us trained into travelers by like age 4!!! So here’s what I did…
First, I went to the dollar store and picked out some fun things for the kids to do; coloring books, crayons, books to read, little dinosaurs, a puzzle, etc.
The trick is to get them excited to get on the plane, so we went and bought new backpacks, then I told them I was going to fill them with presents and they could have them back when we got on the plane. I also picked out some fun snacks, especially chewy fruit snacks for the take offs and landings.
We also thought we were smart by buying cheapy cups with lids so they didn’t spill their drinks. It wasn’t that great of an idea, they spilled either way, but the cups were just something extra for us to carry and try not to spill. When you have three kids and 8 minutes to get to your next plane you don’t need anything working against you.
It was a really fun idea and the kids really liked it. We did 6 presents, one for each hour we were on the plane. My only suggestion would be to maybe hide a few of them, Owen, my 3 year old wanted to open all of them at once.
